Coping with Crowded Buses and Trains

How to "ease the squeeze" at rush hour

As more people turn to TriMet to get around town, buses and trains are often full at rush hour. Here are some ideas for coping with the crowds on your commute:

Try to flex your hours

Check with your employer to see if you can adjust your work hours to avoid the commute crunch. The most crowded times to ride are 7:30–8:30 a.m. and 5–5:30 p.m. Avoid these times if possible.

Help keep things moving

"Go with the flow" graphicSmart riders know that seconds count. These simple time-saving tips can really add up—and help us get you to your destination on time:

  • Be ready to board with exact change or a valid ticket, transfer receipt or pass.
  • Let other riders exit the vehicle before you board.
  • Don't block the aisles or doorways. If you have a bag, bike or stroller, make sure it's not in the way.
  • Use only one seat at a time.
  • Go with the flow. If standing, move as far as you can to the back of the vehicle so others can board faster. On the bus, exit through the rear door whenever possible.
  • Don't hold the door open on MAX.

Follow the rules for riding

Everyone deserves a safe and comfortable ride. That's why all riders are expected to follow TriMet's rules for riding.
